Get Involved!

The BMS membership elected its new Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November. Thank you to everyone who applied to join the Board and/or attended the event. There is one more position available for a Director at Large – see here for more information.

Community volunteers are an integral part of what we do, from our program volunteers to our board members. Without the more than 100 volunteers who help us, BMS would not be able to deliver its free sports recreation programs for children and youth throughout the year.

In addition to the volunteer roles described below, other opportunities to support BMS events and operations may be posted here, on our Facebook page and/or on the GoVolunteer website as they become available.

YELL Coach

YELL (Youth Engage Learn Lead) is about gaining leadership skills in a hands-on sports context. You will receive formal training and certifications, but much of the practical learning will happen through your volunteer work in the Burnaby MoreSports program. Volunteers are a huge part of our program – we simply couldn’t do it without the positive energy and commitment of the YELL coaches.

All YELL participants receive free training and certifications. Through your training and volunteer experience you will learn to work with children, lead recreational sport programs, and practice other valuable skills in a safe and supported environment. The YELL Leadership Program can also help you gain valuable work experience for resumes, meet graduation requirements, and receive reference letters. And, of course, you will have some fun in the process!

Junior Coach

The Junior Coach Program is designed to get Grade 6 and 7 students involved. Typically these kids have participated in Burnaby MoreSports programs and want to continue to be involved. Junior coaches get to help run the program they previously participated in. While the Junior Coach Program is not as formal as for the YELL coaches, it’s a great opportunity for older elementary school children to learn basic coaching skills in a supportive environment.

Board Member

The BMS Board of Directors is an elected group of trustees whose role is to  establish strategic direction for the Society, provide oversight of day-to-day operations, and actively support the Society’s mission to provide accessible sports programming for marginalized young children and youth in Burnaby.

The BMS Board will be seeking additional members in the future according to specific needs identified during strategic planning activities. This may involve anything from governance to fund development to IT.

Please stay tuned for details on future opportunities. In the meantime, thank you for your interest in Burnaby MoreSports Society!
